The line from the tee is over
the gorse bushes in front that create a semi blind drive
- in the distance are some tall trees and if one takes
a target left of centre of them you will be well placed
on the fairway.

There is a large bunker, called
Cheape's, that awaits any balls hit left towards the
17th tee at 260 yards. Extremely nasty and will most
certainly cost you a shot early in the round.
This is the first of the famous
x7 double greens on the Old Course and one must remember
that it is white flags going out & red flags coming
back in. Nothing worse than hitting your approach to
10 feet at the wrong flag and finding you have actually
got a 40-60 yard putt!

To have a good opportunity of
getting reasonably close to the flag it is advisable
to play your approach from the centre or right centre
of the fairway. A good drive will leave you 130-140
yards to the front edge of the green. I would avoid
playing short of the green here as the undulations at
the front can throw the ball left or right, rarely straight.
I would suggest carrying the ball x5 yards passed the
front edge allowing the gentle left to right slope to
take the ball down to the hole.
